Annual Report 2021 https://studentenergy.org/annual-report-2021/ https://studentenergy.org/annual-report-2021/#respond Thu, 31 Mar 2022 11:15:43 +0000 https://studentenergy.org/?p=10628 Student Energy’s 2021 Annual Report is out! Check it out here.

It was another rollercoaster of a year for the world, and we are grateful to have experienced it together as an organization and with our global youth community. Throughout the year, we are energized by the many young people who are striving to make an impact and keep climate action at the forefront. This past year, as we continued to grow our staff and Board of Directors teams internationally, we also aligned our various program offerings into one cohesive Programs Ecosystem that provides multiple pathways for young people to engage with Student Energy. Whether young people are considering a future in energy for the very first time, or whether they are ready to launch their own energy project, there is a Student Energy program that is designed to provide youth with the tangible skills, networks, and resources needed to reach the next level. We also put into motion our most ambitious initiative yet, the Student Energy Solutions Movement, which aims to deliver on our goal of empowering young people to take action by raising $150 million by 2030 to launch 10,000 youth-led clean energy projects.

Here are some of the things we accomplished in 2021:

  • We launched the Student Energy Solutions Movement, as a youth-led UN Energy Compact, in partnership with the Government of Denmark as our first funder and New Energy Nexus as our project implementation partner. The announcement was made at the UN High Level Dialogue on Energy in June, and we held an in-person launch during New York Climate Week.
  • We launched the initial findings from the Global Youth Energy Outlook at COP26, with several of our Regional Coordinators attending in person to present their work.
  • Student Energy’s 40 global Chapters engaged 43, 579 people in 2021 through in-person and virtual community engagements.
  • Our Energy System Map web and video views have continued to rise, reaching a total of 14 million+ lifetime views, with 2.5 million of those just in 2021.
  • For COP 26 in Glasgow, we brought together our largest youth delegation yet, supporting 8 of our team members to attend and speak at over 10 events, and collaborated with many other Student Energy alumni in attendance.
  • We continued expanding our core programs, including the second cohort of the Student Energy Fellowship (formerly known as the Leaders Fellowship), and the fourth annual cohort of the Greenpreneurs virtual startup incubator.
  • The Intersectional Equity Taskforce completed their term, and put together a set of ambitious recommendations to be implemented in coming years.
  • Led by SevenGen and powered by Student Energy and Indigenous Clean Energy, we supported the launch of the ImaGENation Indigenous Youth Mentorship Program in 2021, and continued the planning process for the second SevenGen Indigenous Youth Energy Summit, rescheduled to be held in 2022.
  • Student Energy’s team grew from 25 staff members to 29 staff and 7 international Associates.
  • We provided $133,000 in funding directly to young people to support them with honorariums and awards to help them take action on energy, and are gearing up to launch our direct-to-youth funding model, Student Energy Ventures, in 2022.

Butabika Community Recycling Group-(BCRG) https://studentenergy.org/butabika-community-recycling-group-bcrg/ https://studentenergy.org/butabika-community-recycling-group-bcrg/#respond Mon, 27 Sep 2021 21:42:22 +0000 https://studentenergy.org/?p=7585 Butabika Community Recycling Group (BCRG) is a community social group, based out of Kampala, that collects and sorts domestic solid waste to help achieve zero-waste in communities and enable a circular economy through value additions to waste. BCRG has been actively taking the lead in diverting plastic waste from the environment to make a transition to a sustainable circular economy. In a matter of a year, , BCRG was able to  removed 15.6 tons of plastic waste from the environment, which is a big milestone for the group.

Participating in the Greenpreneurs program has opened our minds and enabled us to clearly understand our ideas by streamlining our thinking process.

The 1:1 mentorship opportunities with Zanele Sithole, Dagmar  Zwebe (GGGI Uganda country representative ) and Pragya Dawadi have encouraged and advised us on how to run  a successful social enterprise.

BCRG aims to achieve 3 aspects of sustainable impact.

  • Reduce domestic solid waste in communities by collection and sorting for value addition.
  • Create local jobs and income for the Ugandan economy by using waste as a raw material for making various eco-friendly products.

Reduce our carbon emissions and the number of toxins released into the environment to curb climate change.

Out of all of the waste generated in the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area (GKMA), only 40% (587,124 tons) is collected and taken to a landfill, leaving 60% uncollected as a result of poor waste management services and urban population growth. This system fails to recognize that waste has many valuable uses.

BCRG is a community social group protecting the environment from the diverse negative effects of domestic solid waste through the best voluntary and involuntary recycling, reduction, and reuse practices.

We supply plastic waste to  partner organizations to produce  building products while degrading waste is used for soil composting and making briquettes for the community.

Uganda is a developing nation with all the associated problems of an urban population increase, including poor solid waste management systems due to unplanned settlements and capacity. We started this project to involve all stakeholders through volunteering or paid jobs for the collection and sorting of waste, to limit landfilling, indiscriminate disposal, and burning of waste which puts the environment at stake.

EASY BIKE: Indonesia – Sustainable Energy & Green City Development https://studentenergy.org/easy-bike-indonesia-sustainable-energy-green-city-development/ https://studentenergy.org/easy-bike-indonesia-sustainable-energy-green-city-development/#respond Mon, 27 Sep 2021 21:18:14 +0000 https://studentenergy.org/?p=7576 Easy Bike is a startup that provides an electric mobility ecosystem to support smart and green city development. We create electric bicycles and solar powered charging stations which are integrated into mobile applications.  Easy Bike aims to change people’s mobility behaviour from using fossil fueled transportation to using eco-friendly transportation in order to reduce carbon emissions footprint.

“By participating Greenpreneurs, the key takeaway we learned is that business is not only about looking for revenue, but looking for how the business can have a sustainable impact on society and the environment. The 12-weeks program containing learning modules, weekly webinars, 1-on-1 sessions, mentor sessions and weekly tasks helped us grow our entrepreneurship capacity. Greenpreneurs has also expanded our network by connecting us with GGGI country representatives to seek opportunities to develop our products and spread our impact more broadly.”

We create 3 key impacts:
  • Reducing GHG Emissions Easy Bike is zero emissions transportation
  • Reducing Costs Easy Bike is cheaper than spending money on using fossil fueled transportation
  • Save Time Mobile application helps users find electric bicycles nearby that ready to use

We provides electric bicycles ecosystem support for smart and green cities development

“We have been working since 2019. As a new enterprise we are facing investment issues to research our market needs and develop our product. As well, in Indonesia the electric mobility sector is a new business sector. We have a huge opportunity to be a pioneer of electric mobility enterprise in Indonesia.”

ART-PESOUNG: SENEGAL- Sustainable Energy / Sustainable landscapes / or Green City Development https://studentenergy.org/art-pesoung-senegal-sustainable-energy-sustainable-landscapes-or-green-city-development/ https://studentenergy.org/art-pesoung-senegal-sustainable-energy-sustainable-landscapes-or-green-city-development/#respond Mon, 27 Sep 2021 21:00:19 +0000 https://studentenergy.org/?p=7556

“I am Joséphine Tine, environmental geographer, social entrepreneur, I have been working in sanitation for almost 3 years and I am the founder of the startup ART PESOUNG.”

ART-PESOUNG is specialized in the construction and sale of ecological toilets based on compressed earth bricks with a new technology of non-drainable pit in rural areas. Our product offers an inclusive emptying service for environmental safety and promotion of the circular economy.

I decided to set up this project as part of a research for a thesis topic on sanitation issues. Thus, I specialized in the construction of ecological toilets to help vulnerable households in rural areas in line with SDG 6.

“Our participation in the Greenpreneurs program, which brings together green entrepreneurs from all around the world, was an opportunity for us to discover the great entrepreneurial sphere via webinar facilitators who shared exceptional, motivating experiences. The program coordinators, mentors, and speakers guided us and made us want to persevere.”

We bring green innovation by working with local authorities and development organizations to facilitate access to sustainable, comfortable, and affordable sanitation facilities for the poorest households. We also establish the CSR of private companies in rural areas in sanitation.

The project is in line with:
  • SDG 6 : Water and sanitation for all by 2030.
  • SDG 12 : Responsible consumption and production on the transition from a linear economy to circular production.
  • SDG 13 : Fight against climate change and promote renewable energy.

We would like also to strengthen the ecological awareness of citizens

Meeting our mentor allowed us to have more self-confidence, to measure myself as a great businesswoman and business leader of great status. This connection also allows us to redefine our customer segment and to review our objectives. The mentor was useful to us as we have a very low level in English.

“In the pursuit of our business, we are faced with the high cost of building materials. The costs must be affordable thus our products are accessible to our target groups ( vulnerable people in rural areas). In addition, most of the partners that we would like to target work only with the State or associations and not with companies.”

RECICLAPP: MEXICO – Green City Development (Smart Recycling) https://studentenergy.org/reciclapp-mexico-green-city-development-smart-recycling/ https://studentenergy.org/reciclapp-mexico-green-city-development-smart-recycling/#respond Mon, 27 Sep 2021 20:39:05 +0000 https://studentenergy.org/?p=7553

“In our region, recycling is almost non-existent. We set out to optimize the waste managment process, and that implies changing people’s habits. That is always a challenge. Not everyone can find the time to take their waste to recycling centers, much less make it a habit. After testing several models, we came to what ReciclApp is today, the simplest way for people to recycle”.

By using ReciclApp, together we achieve:
  1. Recycling more than two-thirds of all waste produced: We divert all your recyclables to the appropriate destination to extend the life of the resources.
  2. Minimize greenhouse gases: You can verify through the app the amount of emissions you helped prevent.
  3. Being part of the ReciclApp community: Fortunately, good habits are contagious. Once the first users start recycling, everybody else in the community joins in!

ReciclApp: “To inspire and enable every person in the world to protect and secure our planet’s resources”

“Greenpreneurs helped us evolve ReciclApp in the areas we needed. We connected with experts, reviewed our strategy, set up operations, and tested several iterations. We launched our MVP and beta tests in Torreon, Coahuila, while we tested hypotheses and improved our project. Greenpreneurs propelied us to achieve such meaningful results in less than 3 months! Beyond being a worldwide startup competition, this program is a great acceleration for all participants. We’re all contributing to solve the greatest challenge of this generation!”

AIREE: Mongolia – Sustainable Landscapes, Green City Development https://studentenergy.org/airee/ https://studentenergy.org/airee/#respond Mon, 27 Sep 2021 17:56:18 +0000 https://studentenergy.org/?p=7542

“The Greenpreneurs 2021 program guided us in establishing customer recognition, customer value-based, experience-based customer segmentation, and target group recognition techniques. This program also introduced us to the concept of non-biased design thinking in any kind of business model.”

Airee is a team of young activists and scientists integrating locally sourced wool air purifier with a natural algae air washer to prevent air pollution related diseases in the 2.3 million living in lethal air pollution. We are mobilizing the opportunity to improve nomads’ livelihoods by creating a scalable value-added product out of sustainably sourced wool, a filter for indoor air purifiers.

The modern lifestyle requires us to spend 80-90% of our time indoors. Ulaanbaatar population is exposed to building related diseases from poor ventilation and outdoor air pollution 100 times the WHO guidelines, where indoor air is five times worse than the outside. As a result, miscarriages are 3.6 times more likely to happen during pollution season and over 3,500 children suffer from pneumonia annually. Fresh air should not be a luxury. Especially in the safety of your own home or in the delivery room where your baby will take their first breath. We focus on the following 3 pillars of sustainability:

As a participant in GREENPRENEURS 2021, we have a better understanding about the main concept of building environmentally friendly and sustainable business models. We learned that businesses should not only focus on profits, but should also look to solve social problems through benefiting certain groups (Mongolian rural area herders, National federations of pasture user group of herders).

  • Prevention of indoor air pollution and related diseases [Customer value]
  • Reduce plastic wastes [Environmental impact]
  • Improve local herders’ livelihood [Social impact]

Airee is the first-ever organic algae and wool-based indoor air purifier and humidifier. It purifies and humidifies Mongolia’s dry, non-ventilated indoor air using locally sourced sustainable raw materials.

“The necessary infrastructure that will ease the assembly of our product has not been established in Mongolia. This means we currently need to prepare and supply our raw materials. However, we believe the formation of relevant NGOs and federations will open up many opportunities for us.”

Applications are now open until April 27th, 23:59 UTC! Find the application form here. Visit www.studentenergy.org/greenpreneurs to learn more about the program.

Is Greenpreneurs affected by the COVID-19 pandemic?

Greenpreneurs was developed as a fully virtual, cost-free program from its inception, so that it could be accessible to young people all around the world, at all stages of their education or careers. In 2020, we adapted part of our 12-week online curriculum in response to public health guidelines on social distancing, to fully support teams to develop impactful projects with their teams even if they temporarily do not have access to university facilities, meeting spaces, or the ability to conduct in-person consultations and community engagement activities. Winning teams also received the opportunity to present their final pitches virtually at the Global Green Growth Institute’s Annual Meeting, where they received prize money to scale their social enterprises.

We hope that Greenpreneurs will offer an opportunity for young people to continue building the skills and professional networks that they need to take action, while developing impactful solutions that will build resilience in their communities. In addition to fostering remote teamwork, we will be introducing additional content to equip participants with the tools they need to be effective leaders that can respond to the needs of their communities in a time of multiple global crises.

Learn more about Greenpreneurs experience and our past winning teams here.

How to apply:

Applications are now open and will close on April 27th, 23:59 UTC. Young people between the ages of 17 and 35 can form a team and submit their idea for a solution in the following focus areas:

These priority themes reflect the urgent issues impeding sustainable growth in developing countries, and in achieving climate change targets and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).  While teams may apply from anywhere, priority will be given to teams applying from one of GGGI’s Member Countries.

Annual Report 2020 https://studentenergy.org/annual-report-2020/ https://studentenergy.org/annual-report-2020/#respond Mon, 01 Mar 2021 23:54:59 +0000 https://studentenergy.org/?p=5857 Student Energy’s 2020 Annual Report is out! Check it out here.

We adapted our plans and programs in a big way this year, and we couldn’t have done it without you – thank
you. Whether you learned about Student Energy for the first time this year, joined us as a partner or a program participant, or cheered us on through social media, your support allows us to continue making an impact. Here are some of the things we accomplished this year:

  • We grew our network to 47 chapters in 22 countries, who engaged over 16,000 youth in 2020.
  • We launched the first Leaders Fellowship cohort in January, and ended the year with 47 global teams completing their 10-month program. We’re set for an even bigger year in 2021, as we bring in 90+ teams for the second cohort in response to overwhelming demand for the program.
  • The Global Youth Outlook survey is now available in eight languages, and we are working with a global youth team of Regional Coordinators to reach 50,000 young people in the lead-up to COP26.
  • Our Energy System Map and video users skyrocketed this year, reaching a total of 10 Million+ users, with 2.5 million of those just in 2020, as more students and educators turned to digital energy learning resources. This year, we launched the  new Energy System Map at  www.studentenergy.org, featuring the new “Influences” layer, to help young people understand how to change the energy system.
  • We provided $120,000 in funding directly to young people to support them with honorariums and awards to help them take  action on energy, and are working on an even more ambitious direct-to-youth funding strategy for 2021.
  • To date Student Energy has now partnered with 90 organizations to make space for youth, we’ve developed new models for intergenerational collaboration that will continue to expand through 2021.
  • Student Energy’s team grew from 9 to 25 staff members
  • As a youth-led organization, we are excited to see that youth leadership for bold, just climate action is being recognized more often on the global stage. We are hopeful for this recognition to grow into more meaningful support and resources for youth-led climate and energy solutions in 2021. To make this happen, we think there’s a lot more that organizations, governments, and those in power need to do to fully empower and equip youth with the tools and resources they need to take action.

At the end of the 12-week program, teams will compete for a chance to receive seed funding to further expand their initiative. Winning teams will also receive conference bursaries to Student Energy’s International Student Energy Summit, taking place in 2021.

Will Greenpreneurs be affected by the COVID-19 pandemic?

Greenpreneurs was developed as a fully virtual, cost-free program from its inception, so that it could be accessible to young people all around the world, at all stages of their education or careers. This year, the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic presents new challenges for young people who are passionate about implementing climate change and sustainability solutions in their communities, as many summer learning opportunities, internships and work placements have been interrupted. We hope that Greenpreneurs will offer an opportunity for young people to continue building the skills and professional networks that they need to take action, while developing impactful solutions that will build resilience in their communities.

We are adapting parts of our 12-week online curriculum and skill-building activities in response to public health guidelines on social distancing, to fully support teams that will not have access to university facilities and equipment or meeting spaces. For example, community engagement and consultation are important parts of our 12-week program as it is crucial for developing meaningful, equitable climate solutions, but COVID-19 means that many traditional community engagement methods are not possible for now.

In addition to fostering remote teamwork, we will be introducing additional content to equip participants with the tools they need to be effective leaders that can respond to the needs of their communities in a time of global crisis.
